An Interview with Lisa Gay, the creator of the Homework Buddy™
Why did you create the Homework Buddy™?
Along with helping my own kids with homework, I had been conducting some after school workshops for elementary aged students and had seen the importance of students’ organizational skills for success with homework. I wanted to provide the students in my workshops a product that they could use at home to stay organized – and I couldn’t find one that had all the features that I wanted them to have. It was that experience that got me thinking about ‘just making one myself’!
What features did you want the Homework Buddy™ to have?
My own kids and the kids in the workshops taught me a lot about what they needed. First and foremost, they wanted to be able to personalize it to make it their own. Second, it needed to have enough pockets to sort different supplies along with a long pocket for longer supplies and paper. Third, kids don’t always do their homework in the same place so it needed to be convenient to carry. Why is being organized for homework so important for student success?
Student Organization is much more than just keeping a desk tidy. It is one aspect in a much larger picture of learning to learn that includes everything from having the right homework supplies to to learning the right skills to complete complex learning tasks. Educators agree that those students who master organization skills in the years before middle school adjust to middle school with less difficulty (academically).
There are some great books posted on the resources tab of the website that underscore the importance of student organization from experts in psychology and education. There is no doubt that learning how to be an organized student plays a very large role in student success during the K-8 years and beyond.
Is there anything else you’d like to add?
As a parent, an adult education instructor, and a perpetual student myself – I’m thrilled that parents and students have found the Homework Buddy™ to be a helpful tool on their road to getting organized for homework!
